ICANN chief hails recent domain name achievements

Wednesday 24th August 2011

Global domain name issues have been brought to the fore very successfully during the last two years, it has been claimed.

Rod Beckstrom, the outgoing chief executive of the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN), said the domain name industry has made significant progress during his two years at the helm.

Speaking to Computerworld, he claimed that ICANN has transformed into a “world class not-for-profit” organisation, which is leading domain name management forward.

“We have clarified to the world what ICANN is. Simple descriptions that are clear and evocative, such as ‘One World One Internet,’ have gone global and have helped people understand what we do,” stated Mr Beckstrom – who recently announced plans to leave his post in July next year.

He highlighted a number of successes for ICANN – including the launch of internationalised domain names, foreign language scripts and Domain Name System Security Extensions.

ICANN also recently approved the introduction of generic top-level domain names, which will give businesses the opportunity to fully customise their web addresses.

Organisations will be able to register their own domain name extensions between January 12th and April 12th 2012.
